Choosing to attend the University of Utah and study Atmospheric Sciences means choosing small class sizes, award-winning faculty, and a familial atmosphere. The B.S. degree meets all of the federal requirements for employment as a meteorologist and is designed so that transfer students who have completed the prerequisite math, physics, and chemistry courses can complete the program in two years.  In general, the University accepts all credit from regionally-accredited colleges and universities.  The Academic Advisor for the Department will evaluate all transfer courses to determine how they articulate to specific B.S. degree requirements. Suitably-prepared transfer students will spend their last two years completing required lower- and upper-division ATMOS courses, ATMOS elective courses, technical elective courses, and the capstone experience.  A complete list of ATMOS courses is available here.

The faculty members within the Department of Atmospheric Sciences are actively engaged in research, bringing in more than $4 million dollars in research funding each year.  This provides our students with ample opportunities to get hands-on experience with state-of-the-art instrumentation, participate in field experiments, or perform an undergraduate research project under the supervision of one of our faculty members.

Our Department also hosts a student chapter of the American Meteorological Society and the student-run Ute Weather Center.  Both provide great opportunities for transfer students to get to know other students in the program.

Minimum admission requirements for transfer students (subject to change by the University):

  • 30 semester credits or more of transferable coursework from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Applicants transferring from another college or university are expected to have previously graduated from an accredited high school.
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.6 or higher. Students who have an associate of arts or an associate of science degree from a regionally accredited institution may be admitted with a 2.35 GPA or higher.
